Originally, “diaper” was referred to the type of material rather than the usage. Linen was the original diaper cloth. Shakespeare wrote “”Another bear the ewer, the third a diaper” in The Taming of the Shrew. In US, diapers are often referred to as “pampers” from the popular brand.

Diapers are made with absorbent layers of disposable materials, terry toweling fabric or cloth. The choice to use either disposable diapers or cloth is controversial. Most attribute health, convenience emphasized by the makers of commercial diapers whereas the cloth diapers are cheaper and have less impact on the environment.

Cloth diapers are reusable, place less stress on landfills and are washable. Children wearing cloth diapers tend to get toilet trained earlier, since the cloth retains moisture, permitting the child to feel when it is dirty and wet causing them to associate the feeling with elimination. Eco friendly and alternative materials, which are grown without any use of pesticides, such as unbleached hemp and organic cotton are also used in some niche market diapers.

In recent years, cloth diapers have become more user friendly, with Velcro or snaps and pre-formed. The pocket or stuffable diapers are also getting popular. These diapers come with an outer shell sewn on three sides to a stay-dry liner. In many cities, there are cloth-diapering services, which deliver clean diapers and pick up soiled ones.

Disposable diapers are normally made of a waterproof exterior which resembles cloth in appearance, an inside layer which is actually a moisture-wick and an inner core to absorb the moisture (mostly dried hydrogel). The cloth diaper market has been taken over by the disposable diapers.

Unintentional and intentional chemicals are laced up in disposable diapers to speed up the absorption process. Even though the system enables to keep the skin dry, there is a potential risk of skin irritation suffered by the baby.

The ease of simply throwing away a soiled diaper is the inherent convenient factor for the popularity of disposable diapers whereas the cloth diapers leads to the irritating chore of washing it.

One of the recent developments is a reusable, flushable hybrid system, which contains an outer pant – quite fashionable – and an inner part, which absorbs the moisture. The inner part can be flushed or disposed of easily and the outer part is reused after washing.

Yes, there are people out there who prefer to cling to the adage that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. While this mantra may hold weight when it comes to things like get rich quick schemes, with regards to cloth diapers it’s a safe bet that these wonders are very, very good. Still, some parents are reluctant to try them, and deliver any number excuses. Let’s take a look at the top five and see how they stack up against parental concerns.

1) Cloth diapering isn’t really cost effective. It’s natural to check the prices of an individual cloth diaper and suffer mild sticker shock. When you’re shopping for diapers for the first time, you’ll see one cloth priced around fifteen to twenty dollars as opposed to 20-30 disposables for the same price and think you’re getting the better deal if you buy the latter. Think harder about it, and you’ll realize you can buy ten cloth diapers for about two hundred dollars, and those disposables will cost much more over three years as you buy box after box to keep your baby dry.

Yeah, yeah, we’re ready for the “but the cost of cleaning and the water bill” argument. Of course, you’re not going to toss a diaper loaded with baby poop in the washer. However, taking a few seconds to wash off the excess (usually with a quick dunk in the toilet) and running a small load may not make so much a difference in your water usage. Talk to anyone who uses cloth, and do the math to see how it can work in your favor.

2) I can’t use cloth diapers on my baby at night, they won’t work. Really, now? Makes you wonder what parents did back in the day before disposables were invented. Certainly they didn’t have their babies sleep in an empty tub, or set them on some kind of contraption that captured all the icky stuff.

Your baby can wear a cloth diaper at night, and you won’t wake in the morning to a horrible mess. When you use a pocket diaper with a good cover, perhaps doubling on inserts if you think there will be heavy flow, you’ll find your baby is just as dry as he would be with a pair of Huggies. If you’re thinking of transitioning and this is the deal breaker, buy one with a few inserts and give it a night time test drive, and gauge the results from there.

3) We can’t travel with cloth diapers, it’s such a hassle. Again, you have to wonder how our forefathers managed to expand to the west coast if they couldn’t move their families due to such concerns! Whether you’re going away for the weekend, or embarking on a lengthy vacation, don’t feel you have to make a temporary move to disposables to make the trip easier. You can store all the baby’s essentials in your travel bag, just make sure you bring along a special wet bag for the soiled cloths and some detergent. Thanks to technology it isn’t difficult to track down a Laundromat if needed, and hotels do offer laundry service. Be resourceful and do your research before you leave the house.

4) I’ll just have to buy more anyway as my baby grows. Well, maybe, maybe not. It is possible you may need to replace a cover or two as you go along, but if you know where to shop, you’ll be surprised to know that some brands are actually adjustable. The covers feature snaps that fit to your baby, so when he grows, you simply use different snaps. Brands like bumGenius!, FuzziBunz, and GroVia offer diapers one could feasibly use from birth through the potty training years.

5) All those soiled diapers are going to stink up the house. No lie, even if you buy a pail for disposables and use a scented liner, you still risk a stench. So don’t think that cloth diapers are any worse; in fact, you can head off the problem with a good pail, strong liner, and scented inserts that handle the odor. You likely will not wash diapers daily, but you can keep a pail around for several days until it’s time to do a load without needing a gas mask to enter the nursery.

When you think about it, too, five dirty cloth diapers as opposed to twenty disposables…which do you think will stink more?

Any more arguments against the cloth alternative? Before you doubt, try them out!

Nursery lighting needs to be carefully thought out when you are decorating the baby’s room. For feeding and diapering you need task lighting, but you don’t want to wake him up so much that he can’t go back to sleep after those late night feedings!

Keeping a couple of night lights on in the room is a good idea. You can get a table lamp/night light combination for one of your lamps. The often have cute shadows that babies like to look at. And it keeps you from bumping into things and waking the baby.

Wall sconces are good for directing light to a specific spot, so they make good task lighting. If you install it on a dimmer switch, you can keep it really low and still see what you’re doing. You can put a small table lamp with a low wattage bulb on a high chest, which will diffuse the light and still keep the glare off the baby. They can often be found with matching sheets and bumpers.

A floor lamp on a dimmer is also good, but you must remember to keep the lamp behind a piece of furniture, and the plug must not be accessible to a crawling infant. And you don’t want junior to pull that lamp down on himself!

The bulbs you use in your lamps should be CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) for several reasons.

It is a softer light, and not as hard on baby’s eyes.

If the bulbs are accidentally touched, they are cooler than incandescent bulbs…they won’t burn the baby

Lowering the electric bill and greening up your home is a good thing.

Having a new baby is certainly a joy, but as any new parent knows, also includes changing a lot of diapers. Since your new bundle of joy will be in diapers for at least the next two to three years, it is important that you choose the right changing table to make the job easier.

When looking to purchase a changing station, consider whether a combo changing table dresser would be right for you. A combo dresser includes a section to place a changing pad, while also featuring a set of drawers underneath and a tower to one side. As the child grows older, the changing pad can be taken off and used as a dresser top.

The appeal to using a combo table dresser is that this furniture grows with your child, while also providing ample storage room. The drawbacks are that these combo dressers are more expensive than traditional changing tables and that some parents feel that even once the changing mat is removed, the dresser will still look like a changing table.

If a traditional changing table is what you are looking for, you will be happy to find a wide selection available. Opt for a style that has side railings in order to protect your little one from falling off the table. You can also find changing tables that have unique storage compartments underneath. Choose from wicker storage baskets, cloth drawers or simple shelves. Whichever style of changing table you choose, you will be sure to have easy and convenient storage right at your fingertips.

Also be sure that whatever style of changing table you purchase, you use the safety strap that comes with the pad or table. This safety strap is a small buckle that goes around your child’s waist in order to secure them to the table. While you will also need to have one hand on your child at all times, knowing that they are secured will help prevent against rolling or falling off the table.

You can also purchase your changing table in a variety of styles and finishes, depending on the décor of your child’s room. Opt for a traditional look, or choose a sleek, contemporary design. To complete your investment, purchase accessories that make diapering easier and convenient, including a diaper organizer, a changing pad cover and wipe warmer.

There are so many transitions for you and your child when your baby becomes a toddler. It’s out with the baby nappies and hopefully the majority of sleepless nights too. One of the funnest activities you can have with your toddler is reading. Here, we’ve listed the top four tips on how to get the most out of reading time with your toddler.

Take time out of everyday to read aloud with your toddler

It is important to take time out of everyday for reading. This time should be a time of day you both look forward to. It should be fun and exciting. Be animated and laugh a lot. Listen to the way you tell the story. Be loud and exciting. If you’re having fun and enjoying the time reading, your toddler will too.

It is also a good idea to read at least three stories a day. Even if they are the same three. Children will need to hear a thousand stories before they will begin to read.

You should spend at least ten minutes a day reading with your little one.

Talk to them about the other aspects of the book as you read

It is important that as you read you talk about other aspects of the book. Such as the pictures and what will happen next. Point to images and ask them what they are. Perhaps you have read this story with them several times and you might want to ask them what they think will happen next.

Talk about other things that relate to the book. It is great to just talk to your toddler and expose them to lots of words and language.

Choose the right type of book

The type of books you choose to read with your toddler should be short, have rhythm and repetition. This is a great way to help children learn to read. Repetition is so important. Encourage your toddler to finish the rhyme with you. It may seem obvious, but it is also important to read over and over the books that your toddler loves as they are more likely to engage with something they truly enjoy.

It is important that you don’t teach reading as such or get tense around books.

Play fun games with your child as you read

To keep reading fun, it is a good idea to play games as you read. For instance, pick out letters from the pages you are reading from. Or pick out with them the letters on the page their name starts with. Ask them to finish a rhyme for you. Keep it upbeat and entertaining.

When your child is a toddler there is so much for them to learn. Their transition fromnappies to using a potty/toilet, reading and socialising with other children. The most important thing to remember is to have fun with your toddler and enjoy activities like reading with them as much as possible during this precious time.

“Washable environmentally friendly cloth nappies, nappy covers, liners and cloth nappy acessories. Good for your baby, good for our nature!

Bowel Incontinence is the less common cousin to urinary incontinence. But, as with urinary incontinence, bowel incontinence can often be reversed. Or, at the very least, managed more efficiently. Talk about an emotional experience! Bowel incontinence not only presents horrible odors and causes damage to clothing, furniture, carpeting and bedding linens can be a very tough thing for all involved to deal with. Cleaning and diapering you elder’s backside can be very embarrassing for all involved – especially if it’s your parents. This type of situation more often than not leads to an elder being sent off to a nursing home.

But, there is hope. Before you start getting the diapers, diaper pails, bed pads and liners and air fresheners – or calling a nursing home – get your elder to the doctor. By determining what’s causing the bowel incontinence, your elder’s doctor may very well be able to help cure it. If you run into a doctor that tells you that the situation is simply part of growing older, don’t accept this. Ask them for a referral to a proctologist or a geriatrician. The fact is that in many cases, this problem can be reversed, so don’t let an ill informed doctor tell you otherwise.

While you’d not think this to be so, constipation is the leading cause of bowel incontinence. The hard stool blocks the bowel and liquid stool leaks around the obstruction. While constipation is generally easy to spot, your elder may not want to discuss the situation with you. Keep an eye out and your ears open for the following 9 signs of constipation:

1. Decreased appetite

2. Abdominal bloating

3. Very painful bowel movements

4. A case of the “blahs”

5. A feeling of pressure in the rectal area

6. Smears of stool on underwear

7. Rectal bleeding

8. Small amounts of dry and hard pebble like stool

9. Small amounts of loose stool, leaking or diarrhea

Making a chart of your elder’s bowel movements will be a huge help to your elder’s doctor when they are trying to determine what the problem is or in determining if a particular treatment for constipation has been effective. Keep the chart on the back of the bathroom door, out of site of visitors that may stop by to eliminate any embarrassment your elder may feel if someone were to see the chart.

To get started cloth diapering, you will need a few basic things. First you will need to decide which type of diaper you want to use. Read our article on how to choose the right diaper for you here if you haven’t decided. Once you figure that out, you will need to make sure you have either a diaper pail or a wet bag to store your dirty diapers in. A large lided plastic trash can with a liner will work perfectly for a diaper pail. Or you can find a variety of hanging wet bags. Then you will need to stock up on wipes and wipe solution. Lastly, you will need to determine what kind of laundry detergent you want to wash your diapers with.

How Many Do I Need?

How many diapers you need will depend on three important factors. What kind of diapers you are using, the age of your child, and how often you wash. Here is a general idea of what you will need based on a three day wash cycle.

Newborn to 6 months

* 30 – 36 diapers

* 2 – 3 dozen cloth wipes

* 6 – 8 covers

* 12 – 15 doublers for naps or more for heavy wetters

* 2 -3 Snappi fasteners (if needed)

* 30 – 36 pocket inserts (if needed)

6 to 12 Months

* 24 – 30 diapers

* 2 – 3 dozen cloth wipes

* 4 – 6 covers

* 6 – 9 doublers for naps or more for heavy wetters

* 2 -3 Snappi fasteners (if needed)

* 24 – 30 pocket inserts (if needed)

12 – 24+ Months

* 18 – 24 diapers

* 2 – 3 dozen cloth wipes

* 3 – 4 covers

* 3 – 6 doublers for naps or more for heavy wetters

* 2 – 3 Snappi fasteners (if needed)

* 18 – 24 pocket inserts (if needed)

For Night-time

* 3 pockets with inserts, or

* 3 “night-time” fitteds, or

* 3 prefolds with doublers and

* 1 -2 wool covers, or

* 1 -3 PUL or fleece covers

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost of using cloth diapers varies from person to person. You can spend as little as you need, or you can spend alot. If you are on a tight budget, there are many ways to make your own diapers. You can sew diapers yourself using items from around your house such as t-shirts, or you can buy your own materials. Another inexpensive way is to use Chinese or Indian Prefolds. Prefolds usually cost around $2 each, so you could spend $30 for a stash of two dozen. Add in your covers and Snappi’s and you have a complete stash for under $80.

Of course if you have more allowance in your budget, and you want to go with fitteds or pockets, you can still build a nice stash without breaking the bank. For around $400, you can get about two dozen mid-priced fitteds and some covers. For about the same price, you can get two dozen pocket diapers.

Just think of it this way – even though it seems like you are spending alot of money on diapers, this is still less than half the cost of what you would spend if you used disposables. Compared to the price of using disposables, if you spend $400 on diapers and covers, you will break even in less than a year. When you put it that way, you are actually saving alot of money.

Cloth diapering really is as easy as using disposables – without the huge financial and environmental price tag. At 4 months old, my daughter has not worn a single disposable diaper since she was in the hospital at birth. Just yesterday we were away from home for the whole day, including 2 hours in the car. No diaper problems at all!

Cloth diapering on the road does require a bit of planning. However, using cloth diapers requires no more planning than any other aspect of leaving the house with a baby. Even for longer trips of several days, you can successfully cloth diaper on the road.

Obviously, you will want to pack as many diapers as you think your child will use during the time you plan to be away from home. Then add an extra diaper or two for backup. I like to keep an extra couple of diapers and some cloth diaper wipes in the car at all times, just in case we are out longer than I had planned.

What do you do with wet or messy diapers?

I highly recommend getting a cloth diaper wet bag. These waterproof zippered bags look great and do a great job of containing diaper odors. A regular size bag will typically hold 3-6 diapers and a larger bag typically holds 5-8 diapers. Just empty the bag into the washer and wash it along with the diapers when you get home.

What about wipes?

We use cloth diaper wipes and a spray bottle or foaming bottle of wipes solution. Just spritz or foam the solution onto the wipe and clean baby’s behind. Then, wash the wipes along with your diapers. Our favorite wipes are made with a cute flannel print on one side and soft bamboo velour on the other.

What about overnight trips?

If you plan to be gone for more than a day or two, you will want to either bring along some extra diapers or plan to do a wash load while you are away. Since modern cloth diapers wash and dry quickly, you can run a load in a short amount of time. If you are staying somewhere where there is a washer and dryer, doing a quick load of laundry is no big deal. If you won’t have access to a washer, another good option is to purchase some inexpensive flat diapers to allow you to have extras or to allow for handwashing, such as at a camp site. Simply wash and hang dry any wet diapers and save the messy ones for washing when you get home.

Cloth diapering saves you money at home and on the road, and it is easy on the environment. Sure, you do need to bring the diapers home with you, but is it really the right thing to do to leave dirty diapers wherever you visit? Cloth diapering on the road can also be a laundry saver. Most parents tell me they have fewer diaper leaks once they start using good cloth diapers.

If you have children over the age of eight or nine years old, here is a parenting tip on how you can get things done quicker and easier with the help of your kids. It will cut your chores in half and give your children the opportunity to learn how to participate in the “daily shuffle” of things.

Help with Laundry

Laundry is a never-ending chore for Moms and Dads, so make it easier on everyone (especially yourself) by setting some rules on laundry. If it needs to be washed, the person that wears the item brings it to the laundry, or it is not washed. If you need something for the next day of school, don’t wait until 8:00 at night to ask someone to wash it, or you will be shown how to do that for yourself. Kids Fold Towels, period. With all of the laundry, ironing and everything else to do, this is an easy chore they can do from an early age until they leave for college.

Shopping for Grocery

Helping mom and dad with grocery shopping can be fun and enjoyable for kids. Children are always quick to delegate orders when Mom is on the way to the Grocery Store .Next time you are headed out to the store, make it a family event. Evenly divide the grocery list between everyone and just so time isn’t wasted at the Magazine stand, make it into a fun contest. For example, whoever finishes finding their items last, cleans up the dishes after the dinner meal.

Cleaning out the family vehicles

Car washing can become a task that no one wants to do, even Dad. Since it isn’t anyone’s favorite pastime, have the entire family roll up their sleeves for family fun. Mom and Dad, get ready, it’s sure to be a water fight! Make it fun but get it done!

Work in the Yard

Traditionally the yard is Dad’s domain. It should not be his responsibility only. It can easily be done if everyone pitches in. Assign the younger children the task of picking up sticks or trash from the lawn area before Dad begins to mow. All toys can be moved aside by the people that use them!

Yard sale preparation

Do you plan for a year sale? If you’ve ever experienced having a yard sale then you know the time and preparation in getting things ready for the big day. Children can help price things for the sale (they usually like that) and they can certainly go through their things with you to see what to keep and what to send out the door! Boys like to help Dad put out the yard sale or garage sale signs, and they may even want to make their own!

Leveraging your effort is a nice and effective thing. The chores will be cut in half if you let your children take some responsibility by helping you accomplish things around the house. The above list is only a suggestion, and you can add things that you think your children might be able to help you do. If you do not give your children an allowance, you should consider doing so if they pitch in and help. If they already receive an allowance, offer to reward them with a family night out doing something everyone enjoys! Also, when you assign chores, try to always make it a short and easy task. After all, they are just children!
